Ett led i arbetet är att hjälpa till med att minska mödra och barna dödligheten hos romerna i Arad Rumänien.
Rumänien
Rumänien har den högsta mödra och barnadödligheten i EU. Mödravård existerar inte alls och graviditets komplikationerna kan vara livshotande. Romerna lever i stor fattigdom och misär,barna dödligheten är stor, speciellt under det första levnads året. Barnavården är usel eller saknas helt.
Sedan hösten 2013 har vi samarbete med en ideell hjälporganisation, Networks, som har fokus på de cirka 10 000 romerna som lever i och omkring Arad, en stad i närheten av Timisoara. WRA har även kontakt med stadens universitet och med kvinnokliniken på Universitetssjukhuset.
I Arad träffade vi representanter för Networks samt doktorer, gynekologer och förlossningsläkare för att diskutera möjligheten att införa mödravård för romska kvinnor där. Sex kvinnliga läkare under specialistutbildning blir nu volontärer i ett mödravårdsprojekt initierat av oss i WRA. Det startar som ett mindre pilotprojekt på sjukhuset och efter utvärdering publiceras resultatet i en internationell tidskrift.
Vi planerar också ett större projekt med uppsökande verksamhet via en mobil mottagning i samarbete med Networks, Erikshjälpen och Reningsverket i Göteborg för att kunna sänka mödra- och barnadödligheten bland Arads romer vilka lever i en ofattbar fattigdom och misär.
Projektet startade 1.3 2018. Vi planerar att åka till Arad i September 2018 för en workshop , om barnavård, barnets tillväxt och utveckling och dess behov under det första levnads året. Experter, barnläkare från Nya Karolinska Sjukhuset kommer att planera och leda work shopen.

Update, May -19
A car for the support of women when visiting the Maternity Clinic in the Hospital and for the staff, nurses and midwives to visit communities for maternal care and education.
90 women have been included in the procject.
There are good relationships with trust buildings between the women , networks three commmunities and the Maternity Clinic in the hospital. The women are becoming more open with the staff in the Maternity Clinic . The Networks team has a closer collaboration and communication with the staff at The Maternity Clinic. More women are attending the Maternity Clinic in the hospital than before the project. Networks has noticed that only two women have not visited the hospital at all during the last year. More women are taking their own responsibility for getting their analysis and tests performed . There is now targeted education for all women in each of the three communities
Education topics are:
- Pregnancy : womens reproductive anatomy and physiology, including intimate hygien
- Basics about menstruation and conception
- Development of the foetus and changes in the woman's body throughout pregnancy
- Nutrition
- Post-natal care- in the first week of life
- How the women shall take care of the baby and herself
- Risks in pregnancy, complicated deliveries.
- The importance of regular check ups and the importance of maternal care.
- Normal birth. Ceasarian section
- The effects on the pregnancy and the development and growth of the child and breast feeding of consumption of drugs, alcohol and smoking
- Care of the Newborn and Breastfeedilng
- Hygien – bottles and cleanliness (education with guidance from the hospital)
A one hour education session is performed in each community once a month. Each education group consists of 2-8 pregnant women
Seminars targeting general practitioners and hospital personnel:
Two workshops have been held already:
- One in February 2018, led by experts from The Karolinska Institute and Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden
- Workshop on Well-Baby and Child Care, September 22 at the Vasilis Goldis University in Arad. GPs from Arad County, obstetricians from the maternity ward of the University Hospital. The agenda was, briefly: 1. Child Health care -to support parents for the health and well-being of their children. The seminar was followed by a meeting about the implementation of the Maternal- and Child care on September 23, with participants from WRA Sweden, Networks Romania and The Maternity Clinic.

Before the workshop a meeting about the implementation of the project was held., the 22nd of FebruaryParticipating in the meeting were Networks, The Maternity Clinic in the hospital and WRA. The next Seminar will be in February 2020 in Arad. Topics for the seminar will be Ultrasound screening in early pregnancy. Post natal care , The first week of Life.
A registered PhD student is now working in the project, Dr. Marc Rusu-Loredana Ancuta . Tutor is Professor Solvig Ekblad, Karolinska Institutet.
